Hello beautiful people. I think Happy New Year is still in order as we are still in the first week of 2018. So the holiday season is almost coming to an end. People are traveling back home and moving back to their work stations and schools are to resume soonest. For someone that’s usually anticipating school resumption, am not so sure I feel that way right now because I still don’t know how well I can handle blogging and school life. It’s something I hope to write about soon.
Anyway, as a makeup trainee back then, there are a lot of things that I wasn’t thought and working with skin tone is one of them. Knowing the skin tone of a person is one of the things that makes one makeup artist better than another which is aside from these 9 common mistakes people make while applying eye makeup which I wrote about in my previous post.
I will be elaborating on the importance of knowing your skin tone before going ahead to get your makeup products in the later part of the post. For now, let’s talk about how to identify your skin undertone. Shall we?
HOW TO KNOW YOUR SKIN UNDERTONE
Basically, there are three types of skin undertones regardless of the skin color. The cool tone, the warm tone and the neutral tone and these are tips to help you determine which is yours.
SUNLIGHT VEIN CHECK
Go under the sun, while holding your arm down, study the color under your skin and the color of your veins.
If you observe a greenish color under your skin, then you are most likely warm tone. While if the color under your skin appears to be blueish or dark purple then you are cool tone. Also, if you find it difficult determining the color under your skin, then you have a neutral skin tone.
P.S Try washing your arm before going ahead with this exercise for a better result.
TANNING AND SUN BURN
If you tan under the sun and experience sun burn very often then you are most probably cool tone, but if not, then you are warm tone or neutral.
SILVER AND GOLD COLOR TEST
For this test, try taking aside your personal preferences. If you look better in gold toned jewelries, then you are warm tone: while cool toned people looks better in silver/platinum. While if you look good on both colors, lucky you! You are neutral.
YOUR EYE COLOR
People that have blue, grey or green eyes are usually cool toned, while those with brown and hazel eye color are warm toned.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW YOUR SKIN TONE BEFORE GETTING YOUR MAKEUP PRODUCTS
Most times you find yourself confused about what color or shades of makeup products you should get for yourself and you just end up allowing the seller to decide for you. What if the seller is wrong? Or the seller just doesn’t know but needs to sell his/her product. It’s easier to rely on the seller to pick the right lipstick, the right foundation, concealer, etc but its best and safer to make the choice for yourself and these are some reasons why.
It saves your money.
Good makeup products are now more expensive than they used to be. Getting the right makeup product saves you the cost of getting another one if the one you got is not the right one for you.
It gives you the opportunity to define your look.
If you know your skin tone and you know how they react to different shades of colors, you will find it easy creating a bold look, a simple look, a fierce look and any other type of look you love to portray.
Deciding colors for others.
If you are a makeup artist, you tend to meet different people with different skin colors and undertones. Knowing their undertones would help you determine which colors re best for them.
To avoid an awkward looking makeup.
Its no news that if you don’t use the right colors that suits your skin tone for your makeup, you end up with an awkward looking makeup. If the color is too bright for your face, you would look washed or pale and if its too dark, you will end up with a black or sickly appearance.
So this is all you need to know about knowing your skin tone and why it is important you know it. Like always your comments on the topic is appreciated and feel free to ask questions.
