The harmattan season is a wonderful season and of course a very colorful time of the year with celebrations and all. But as wonderful as this season is, it comes with its hazards and terrible effects on the skin. From chapped and tearing lips, dry and scaly skin, white skin especially around the leg. Others include cough, catarrh and some related illnesses.
Keeping a healthy skin during harmattan requires you to observe very simple but effective health tips especially when you have naturally dry skin.
Here are tips on how to take care of your skin during this harmattan season.
Always apply lip balm
So many people suffer chapped and torn(wounded) lips every year because they don’t see the need to use lip balm. The best lip balm for the harmattan season is an oil base lip balm. They help to lock in moisture in your lips and prevents it from getting chapped and wounded. Feel free to apply lip balm as often as you have to. Apply lip balm before applying your matte lipstick to avoid dryness and apply whenever necessary during the day.
Exfoliate your lips
Exfoliating the lips is very important and this should be done at least once in a week during the harmattan season. This helps to remove dead cells that might bring about excessive dryness and in a worse case, cause your lip to tear. Drink a lot of water
During the dry season, the weather is very hot and dry and one easily gets dehydrated. Ensure to drink a lot of water. This will help keep the skin looking healthy and shining all day long.
Use moisturizers and Oils
During the harmattan season, the skin is exposed to harsh conditions that makes the skin lose a lot of moisture which keeps the skin dry and scaly. To repair this, apply moisturizers after bathing to keep the moisture locked inside the skin and give you a healthy glow. You can also invest on any natural oil, they are very good for the skin especially during the harmattan season.

Don’t applying too much makeup too often
Some makeup products contain certain chemicals that does not react well with the skin during the harmattan season. Stick to glossy makeup during the harmattan season and use very little as possible. Avoid using too much powder and concealer during this time. Also, try not to make it an everyday thing.
Avoid licking your lips
Licking your lips can actually dry them out. Saliva contains digestive enzymes like amylase and maltase that wear the lips’ thin skin down, leaving them vulnerable to environmental exposure like dry air. So, licking the lips should be completely avoided during the harmattan season.
Avoid Using extremely hot water
Bathing hot water can inflame the skin, causing redness, itching, and even peeling and can disrupt the skin’s natural balance of moisture, robbing you of the natural oils, fats, and proteins that keep skin healthy. This effect is worse during the harmattan season. When your skin loses oil, your skin ends up looking dry and scaly especially for those that have dry skin. Hence, use lukewarm (warm) water.
